In October 1972, an amateur rugby team were flying out from Uruguay en route to chile over the Andes when the plane struck a snow covered mountain in an area so remote and rugged that most of the mountains in the area didn’t have names.

With around 45 people on board, 12 of the passengers and both pilots were killed on impact as the plan broke in two before coming to rest.

If surviving the crash was one thing, the cold snowy and icy wintery conditions made the situation worse. The passengers were dressed for the summer, and had very little clothing to protect them against the elements.

By day 10, 27 people were still alive. By this time, they concluded the rescue mission would have stopped and they were now on their own.

With little food left, they started to fight amongst themselves. Things were becoming desperate.

Day by day some would venture to explore. They improvised where they could in terms of snow wear i.e. making snow shoes from the plane seats.

By day 18, an avalanche struck the plane killing a further 8 people. Only 19 now remained alive. The safest place to meet their fate was to remain within the wrecked fuselage. Some were starting to think it was easier to die than to stay alive…

On day 60 a decision was made for 3 people to venture out in a last bid to look for help. It was to be a one way trip and they knew it. With no experience, dressed inappropriately and ill equipped, Fernando, Roberto and Antonio left the safety of the plane. They would take a course based on the planes last heading and would continue until they either died or reached help. Either way they were going.

As they began the journey, they kept coming across false summits. Exhausted, cold and hungry they just kept on going. With the mountains being so high, it felt like no progress was being made. But there was no going back. 10 days later and having walked 37 miles, Roberto and Fernando found help. Antonio returned back to the plane en route.

As a result of the effort of Fernando and Roberto, 16 survivors were rescued out of the mountain – all surviving a 72 day ordeal they will never forget. Although part of this story is controversial, the interesting part is how Roberto and Fernando managed to make the 37 mile journey as afterwards, professional mountaineers retraced their steps. It was hard to believe that 2 people with no experience, tools or equipment made such a journey across the mountains. It was achieved with amazing spirit and strong will. They may not have been equipped, but they had the will to keep going forward. A goal worth living for.

In life, it is not about the tools and training, but how we show up in times of adversity. This true story is one of many to help put into perspective how we as humans have a uniqueability and resilience to survive.

As leaders or entrepreneurs, progress is made by leaving the safety of the ‘fuselage’ to gain freedom. Here are some testing questions back to you in respect to the passage above:

·         What desires do you have worth living for?

·         What motivates you to be productive and to reach your destination?

·         What keeps you moving forward once completely worn out?

·         What makes you refuse to quit when faced with defeat or opposition?

This is yo ‘Lazy people want much, but get little. Those who work hard will prosper.’

By the age of 16, Ramona Acosta Bañelos was married. By 18 she had two children, but at this time was deserted by her husband. Poverty stricken in Mexico, left to raise her two children, untrained in any profession and unable to speak English, she had a dream…

She made her way to Los Angeles and with her last $7 dollars got a taxi ride to see a distant relative. Refusing to live on charity from others, she found a job as a dishwasher and a second job making tortillas. Working many hours, she eventually saved $500. With this, she invested in her own tortilla machine. Over time and hard work and as well as studying, she became the owner of Ramona Mexican food products – the largest Mexican food product in the world.

The story goes further as Ramona was to become the 34th Treasurer of the United States – appointed by the President Richard Nixon, hand picked by Eisenhower, as she exemplified the American dream. Eisenhower was quoted to say;

“We succeed only as we identify in life or in war or in anything, a single overriding objective and make all other considerations bend to that one objective”.

So what is unique about leaders and the Strategies of Marketing? They know what it takes to prosper. Granted it is hard work, but they are committed and passionate to pursue a vision, a dream, to reach their goals. They stand out from the crown as they focus on what they want, driven by desire to succeed as well as to stay the course no matter how long it takes. One thing successful leaders don’t do and that is to give up.

So are you on a mission? If so what is driving you? Why do you get out of bed in morning? Are you hungry to succeed? Do you have a vision?

If tomorrow you were appointed as the CEO of a large company, what would you do first? Would you start with a vision, and if so, how would you go out to develop one? More importantly, how would you sell the vision? What foundations will you build upon? What practices would you let go?

Jack Welsh, CEO of GE for many years, was a believer of action learning. He had a game plan to get his people to think as leaders and these could be perceived as desirable qualities of leadership. Here is way to express such qualities:

1. Look within you. What do you get excited about?

2. Look behind you. What has life taught you to this point? Life provides you with the wisdom. Don’t live in the past, but learn from the past. What does your past tell you about your future – good or bad?

3. Look around you.Who can you call upon to help you? Fulfil your destiny with the right people in your life.

4. Look ahead.Aim for a goal? A goal is set by having a vision.

5. Look beside you. What resources are available to you right now – system, tools, books, CDs, conferences, mentors etc.

Do you know your vision, if so, what do you see? The vision must fulfil your destiny! If your vision is not bigger than you, then you are not thinking big enough? Think big!

Ramona may have started with a number of good small business ideas, but with great vision, look where it got her. You too can make a difference today.

Need a boost to help you stay focused in building your business, then you need to become a leader. Apply these qualities of being a leader today and drive your Best Business Ideas From Home to a different level.

In any business, whether in a large corporate business, a small brick and mortar business or whether you are building the foundations of simple small business ideas at home, staying the course can be very difficult. To survive, you must become a leader.

Desirable qualities of leadership is to have a goal, inspired to do what it takes and be hungry for results. Leaders put in the work, don’t put off until tomorrow what could be done today. They make every day count and excuses don’t exist. So how do you become a leader and do what is takes to meet your goal?

A book called ‘Good to Great’ by Jim Collins talks about leadership and the five things that defines what he calls a level 5 leader. He basically articulates it as:

‘someone who is determined to do whatever is necessary to make their company great’.

The key to the statement is to actually do what it takes. We are not talking here about being unethical, but doing everything necessary to get results. Are you pushing yourself, getting ahead of your competitors, taking those extra steps? If this is not the case then you really need to think hard about where you want to be.

When you go to bed at night, you want to confidently say you made the most of the day? Did you do everything you possibly could to move forward in your business!

Leaders look out of the window to credit others when things go well, but look in the mirror at themselves to accept the blame when things go wrong! Where do you stand in this?

Let’s explore examples of leadership qualities under four headings:

1. Leaders confront the brutal facts.

Change the things you don’t like and align yourself to where you need to go. There will be activities you may wish to avoid, and you know you shouldn’t. This is down to laziness.

Diligence! Once you know what needs to be changed, work diligently to make those changes.

You will face challenges. You just need to know how to work through them or around them.

Challenges are not an excuse to stop!

2. Focus on what is working and what isn’t

People like to blame the system, the process or something else when results are not being accomplished. If you are in the blame mode then you don’t really have the desire to do what it takes.

You need to be focusing on positive action and creating a positive mindset.

3. Leaders never lose faith.

Leaders always start with the end in mind.

It’s about how you deal with situations. It’s not going to be easy. It will take time and require hard work. It’s about Action! Focus on your end result.

Did you make that extra phone call! Make that extra visit! If not, why not?

You are here, doing what you are doing because of your core why! This is attractive marketing at its best. It’s your core why that should be resonating with other people.

4. Attract the right people.

Leadership is not about deceiving people. It’s about working with people and allowing people to connect and relate to you. What is it about you that others want to follow?

If you are willing to take those extra steps, then you will be successful. But you do need to take action each and every day. Each day is like pushing a shopping cart. By the end of it, you should have it filled with contents that has enabled you to grow and evolve?

‘It is never the duty of a leader to struggle for someone else. It’s the duty of a leader to encourage them that struggling is worth the while’
